Conservation or Restoration?

When a piece we love is damaged it’s usually seen as catastrophic, but it need not be, as porcelain repair can restore the piece to its former appearance, if required. Most items can be repaired or restored even when parts of the original are missing. Before moving on too far, it’s worth considering just what type of work you are considering. In porcelain repair there is a real distinction between the two areas of work to be carried out.

porcelain vaseConservation techniques aim to preserve and stabilise items for later use without seeking to disguise evidence of the original damage. A typical “museum” type of repair would include cleaning and re-assembling broken shards to reconstruct the original shape and filling any gaps with a sympathetically coloured filler. Some re-touching may also be necessary but the break -lines would still be visible.

Other conservation techniques include stain removal, consolidating cracks and securing flaky glaze..

Restoration aims to disguise damaged areas and bring an object back to its original state by re-building or modelling missing areas, repairing and repainting. This must be carried out sympathetically with materials compatible with the object and not overpaint large areas of original material. Ethical considerations and use of reversible products are a priority in all cases of restoration.

Care of Repaired and Restored Ceramics

A good quality porcelain repair or restoration should last for many years and preserves a treasured piece for future generations. The following care advice will ensure that this is the case:

Repaired and restored ceramics should be used for display purposes only., and kept away from direct sunlight and extreme heat.

Care should be taken when handling repaired ceramics.  Do not lift any repaired ceramic by its handle, Always support the base.

Cleaning can be performed using a small damp sponge or a soft powder brush. Never immerse or soak a restored piece in water.
